Tennis is growing in Wales…
With Andy Murray putting UK tennis back on the map, tennis is more popular now than it has been for years. Getting started is easy, there are plenty of local tennis clubs and many parks have tennis courts open to all. If you’re new to the sport, talk to your local club to see if they will allow you to come in and have a try or book a court for a few hours at a local park. You can often hire equipment at the park tennis courts.
Don’t be put off if your Nadal like talents aren’t exactly obvious at your first try! Tennis is not as easy as it can sometime look when played by professionals! But keep with it and you’ll quickly improve. Tennis coaching is often available from local tennis clubs and group coaching makes it a lot cheaper.
If you want to buy some tennis equipment, rackets cost between £15 to £150 and balls cost around £4 for a tub of four. Most tennis clubs are no longer overly fussy about clothing as long as you are wearing sports clothes and trainers that have non-marking soles.
Tennis can be played on a number of surfaces – grass, indoor and all weather. By far the most common in the UK is the all weather variety – it’s great for beginners too.
Most tennis clubs have internal and/or open youth competitions. They also have a number of teams of varying ability.
