Swimming is a really fun way to to do some exercise and to improve your fitness levels – as long as you don’t mind getting wet :-)
You’re rarely too far from a swimming pool – every city has at least two or three public pools and many towns have their own too. It’s inexpensive, easy to get into and easy to get back into if you haven’t done it for a while.
If you haven’t done much exercise for a while and want to tone up, swimming is great – when you move in water, you use a wide range of muscles and the water acts as a form of resistence – which strenghtens your muscles and helps you to burn fat.
Unlike many other forms of exercise, swimming doesn’t put undue pressure on your joints. The water supports your weight and movement is gradual and jolt free. Swimming can therefore be an excellent form of exercise if you’re overweight or are recoveing from an injury.
Whilst swimming can be a gentle exercise, if you want to really go for it in the pool, swimming can be offer a fantastic full body workout. It can also offer competition – at both local and professional levels, and can be a great way to meet new people – swimming clubs can be very social!
