Arguably, football is Wales’ most popular sport (rugby followers will disagree!)
Football isn’t just for watching! So many of us have got into the habit of being passionate about watching our clubs play, but so many have forgotten how much fun it is to play the beautiful game too. Football is a great way to get fit and stay fit and it’s now easier than ever to get into playing footy – new five-a-side centres are cropping up, offering leagues at loads of different standard levels, and traditional 11 a side parks leagues and youth leagues are still as popular as ever.
Football has grown tremendously in the last decade or so as a women’s sport and many countries around the world now have fully professional women’s leagues. Local leagues for women’s football are not as developed as men’s at present, but if you want to get into women’s football in Wales, there are plenty of opportunities out there to give it go.
There is an extensive youth league structure across Wales. Further info at the links below.
Whether your interest is 5-a-side, 11 a side, women’s football, football for disabled people, coaching or referring, the national governing body can help you find a local contact. The FAW is the national governing body for football in Wales, England has the FA, Scotland the SFA and Northern Ireland the IFA.
