Gwent Specialist Substance Misuse Service (GSSMS)
What service/treatment does your agency offer?
We offer a confidential service for people experiencing complex needs with substance misuse issues. This entails a fully comprehensive assessment, with individualised Treatment and Care Plan packages; Medical Clinics and monitoring by specialist Nurses; substitute prescribing and detoxification; plus specialist Counselling.
Who can contact your agency?
Clients are referred to us from their GPs, Social Services, Community Mental Health Teams, Probation, etc.
What age range of clients does your agency provide a service to?
We currently provide a service to anyone 25 and over. Anyone under this age will be referred to the Young Persons Substance Misuse Service (YPSMS).
Which geographical areas within Newport does your agency operate?
GSSMS covers all areas of Newport.
What happens when someone first contacts you?
Once a Client has been referred to GSSMS, an appointment is arranged for an Initial Assessment. If a complex need is identified, then an in-depth Secondary Assessment will be offered and completed by a qualified Nurse, who will obtain more information on the nature of the Client’s substance misuse and psycho/social needs. Throughout this process Clients are required to provide three urine samples, to assess dependency. If a prescription is required, the Medical Team will then develop a Treatment Plan. The specialist Nurse and the Client will sign up to an individualised Care Plan and the Client will then be monitored on a regular basis throughout their treatment. Counselling is also offered.
Does your agency provide prescriptions?
We offer substitute prescribing for those Clients who are using predominately heroin. We either prescribe Methadone or Subutex.
