If you’re a carer, you and the person you care for may be eligible for support from lots of different places including the NHS, your local council, various benefits and voluntary / not for profit organisations.
The kinds of support you can receive include extra money, equipment and changes made to the place where you live (such as ramps and rails) and support workers coming to your home to help with the caring responsibilities and household chores. The support available can help you, the person you care for and give you a bit of time to yourself.
The best place to go to get help is either one of the Carers organisations, or you can phone your local council directly who will carry out an assessment of your situation. This will involve you and the person you care for meeting with a health or social care worker so they can find out about your situation. The questions may seem like they are being nosey, but they need to have an honest picture of the situation. However, you do not have to answer any questions you don’t want to and what is discussed will remain confidential.
