Often young people don’t think of themselves as being a carer, but if you look after someone else because they are disabled, have mental health problems, a long term health condition or are misusing drugs or alcohol then you are a carer. Help and support is available…
Examples of being a carer include helping your parents to look after a disabled brother or sister, taking care of a parent who is an alcoholic or drug user or taking care of a friend who suffers from depression.
Every caring situation is unique and can range from spending a couple of hours a week doing someone’s shopping and tidying up to pretty much looking after someone 24-7. Whatever the situation and regardless of your age, you have a right to information and support and you should never be left on your own to cope.
You also have the right to decide whether to be or remain a carer, which can be a difficult decision as it can effect how you get on with the person you care for and the rest of your family/friends. It is important that you consider yourself as much as the person you care for. Being a carer should never be something you are forced into doing and you shouldn’t feel under pressure to take on more responsibilities than you are comfortable with.
