Finding new music

We all know it’s wrong to download illegal copies of music from the internet. It’s now easy to download the music you want legally – there are loads of stores out there, from HMV to Play to Amazon to many more that offer easy to use download services.

There are also some great sites out there that can help you find the best of new bands and to explore some amazing music from past decades.

Finding new music top tips:

• Check out Pitchfork.com – all the latest news on a whole host of new, indie, rock and alternative bands. Click on their ‘Best New Music’ link for their latest reviews.

• NME.com is a great site for news, info, tour dates and reviews. There’s also a bustling discussion community on their forums.

• Myspace.com – what band doesn’t have a myspace page? Most pages allow you to listen to some of that band’s tunes and catch up with the latest news from the bands themselves.

• Amazon.co.uk – you can preview albums before you download them, so you don’t have to invest your cash in an album before listening to it. They also offerer recommendations based on what other people looking for the same music as you also look for.

• One great way to listen to find music that is likely to be up your street is www.last.fm – you can type in names of bands you like and last.fm will find other play you other tracks from other bands that are similar. You can also find music by genre on there.

• Download iTunes 8 (it’s free) and try its new ‘Genius’ playlist feature – it lets you automatically create playlists from songs in your music library that go great together.

• Check out www.spotify.com – loads of music to stream, all free and legal. We7.com offer similar services – and it runs in your browser so you don’t have to download any software. We7.com works on different operating systems too – like Ubuntu.

• Search for music blogs that match your tastes – loads of people and groups of people have their own music focussed blogs – they write up their own reviews of albums and gigs. Why not start up your own music blog?

• Online isn’t the only place to discover new music – local concert venues are a great place to check out live bands, be they up and coming, total unknown unsigned bands, or established artists.
