Safer Drug Taking

• Reduce risks by taking less.
• Never mix a drug with other drugs, including alcohol.
• Be aware that the colour, shape or size of a tablet says nothing about its real contents; taking drugs – illegal substances and many legal highs – is an experiment in the unknown as many drugs are mixed with other potentially dangerous substances and chemicals.
• Some drugs don’t have an affect straight away – it is dangerous to take more of a substance when it appears a drug isn’t working. It can take up to 1 hour or more to feel the effects.
• Avoid taking drugs by yourself. Having a trusted friend nearby can reduce the risk of having a bad time and it means that there is someone there who can help if something goes wrong.
• Avoid taking drugs with strangers or people you don’t know well.
• Don’t share any needles. Sharing needles carries very serious risks – including picking up infections such as HIV.
• Never drive after taking drugs.
• Don’t take drugs in other countries. The strength of the drugs might be very different from the UK. Also, getting caught can mean even stronger penalties than in the UK.
• Avoid drugs (other than your prescribed drugs) if you have experienced mental health issues.
