Did you know the UK’s first mosque was built in Cardiff? What’s your best guess for when? Hint – longer ago than you probably think…
The largest religion in Wales is Christianity. The main Christian denominations are the Church in Wales, Presbyterian Church of Wales, Catholicism and Baptism. Wales has a long tradition of Nonconformism and Methodism. The Romans brought Christianity to the Welsh nearly two thousand years ago.
As well as Christianity, there are many other religions with followers in Wales – including Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism and Buddhism. The biggest non-Christian communities are in Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and north east Wales. Ceredigion is the centre of Welsh Buddhism.
Islam is the biggest of the non-Christian religions and its history in Wales goes back further than many realise. The UK’s first mosque was built in Cardiff in 1860. Judaism’s history in Wales goes back at least as far as the mid ninteenth century.
The numbers of people claiming to have no religion has grown over the past few decades. In the 2001 Census, half a million people in Wales – 18% of the population – stated they didn’t follow a religion.
