We build our understanding of the world through language – and with thousands of languages and dialects around the world that’s a lot of different ways to see the world!
Until we’re able to have microchips implanted in our brains, learning any new language is going to take a bit of time. But the rewards are amazing and you don’t have to speak a language perfectly to use it and enjoy it. Learning a language can be a brilliant way to experience a different culture or country – to start to experience it from the inside rather than as a visitor. And you may find people are a lot more helpful if you are able to communicate a little with them in their own language.
So where to start? Well, schools and colleges offer GCSEs in a number of different languages. Alternatively, there are some great courses you can buy that offer course books you can use together with audio courses that you can download to your mp3 player. There are also DVD courses and online course. Some courses are expensive, but some are completely free – try the BBC’s website for some great gratis (that’s free!) online courses in Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Greek and Italian.
Local evening language courses are available in some areas too – have a search online for your area or contact local colleges, universities or those run by your local council.
