You may be able to claim benefits or tax credits depending on how much money you have and/or your personal circumstance. Read on for an introduction and links to find out more…
Benefits that depend on how much money you have (income and savings) are called means tested benefits. Benefits that are dependent on your circumstances (looking for work, being disabled, caring for someone) are called non means-tested benefits.
Some benefits are not available for 16 and 17 year olds because they are often expected to be supported by their parents / guardians. However there are some benefits (for example Job Seekers Allowance) that may be paid in certain circumstances such as if you’re no longer living with your parents/family.
The benefits system can be confusing and the rules can change. But don’t let this put you off claiming what you are entitled to. You can always get a friend or adult to go along with you for support. Always get up to date advice from an expert (listed below) and if you are not happy with the advice you receive get a second opinion. Don’t assume that because someone you know can get a benefit you can too, or that because they didn’t get it, you won’t be able to. Everyone’s circumstances are different. The sources of information below may be able to help you fill in a claim form or put you in touch with someone that can.

Lots of elements of the benefit system change over time – for example, types of benefits available and the eligibility criteria. This page is only intended as an introduction – please check with your local benefits office for up to date information.
